Every TPT seller forum has the thread: "is Premium worth it?" The answers are always anecdotes — "it paid off for me", "waste of money at my volume". Both can be true, because the break-even point is personal: it depends on your prices and your sales rate, and it's a ten-second calculation nobody seems to write down. Here it is.
Basic: one-time $29 fee, then you keep 55% of every sale, minus a $0.30 transaction fee per resource. Premium: $59.95 per year, you keep 80%, and the transaction fee is only $0.15 — and only on orders under $3 (nothing on larger orders). So on a $4.00 resource: Basic pays $1.90 a sale, Premium pays $3.20. Premium earns $1.30 more per sale at that price.
Premium's advantage has to cover its $59.95 subscription: $59.95 ÷ $1.30 = 46.1, so 47 sales a year is the break-even for a $4 store. Under four sales a month, Basic wins. Anything above, Premium wins — and it compounds fast:
| At 30 sales/month ($4 each) | Basic | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Per year | $684.00 | $1,092.05 |
That's $408.05 a year for the same store and the same work — the most expensive thing about Premium is not having it once you're past the crossover.
Premium's per-sale advantage is 25% of your price plus the fee difference. Cheap stores cross over later: at $1.50 resources the advantage is only $0.53 a sale (Basic pays $0.53, Premium $1.05 — and the sub takes 115 sales to recover). Expensive stores cross over absurdly early: at $10, Premium earns $2.80 more per sale and pays for itself inside 22 sales. If most of your catalogue is bundles, you're almost certainly leaving money on Basic.
Since Basic itself now costs $29 (one-time), the real question for a brand-new seller starting from zero is different: you're choosing between $29 once and $59.95 every year, before you know your volume. Reasonable default: start Basic, and set a calendar reminder to redo this maths the month your trailing sales pass ~4 a month. The $29 isn't refunded either way, so it's sunk in both futures.
